About Silence
To be read carefully before registering for a retreat.
Silence and solitude are the primary means of encountering God for Carthusian monks and nuns. Participating in the charism of their order is a profound fraternal sharing that they offer us. It is a grace to be able to experience this treasure in the beautiful setting of Sélignac.
However, this gift is fragile. Silence is entrusted to every member of the house team and each retreatant.
Each of us must therefore protect it by being mindful not to speak in common areas, in the church, in the cell, or around the house. Please turn off your phones upon arrival at the Chartreuse.
Do not worry—others will not feel offended if you do not speak to them when passing by.
Through our silence, let us be guardians of both our personal silence and that of others. This is the greatest act of charity you can offer during the retreat.
Thank you.
Silence can be unsettling for some people. If you are under psychiatric care, we recommend discussing this with your doctor before registering.
